The work shown here represents most of the pieces produced in leisure hours over the past 40 years. It is fortunate that the artist's late wife, Virginia, had a flair for photography. For it is her pictures that are mostly shown in this retrospective. If she had film when the piece was completed, she took a picture, otherwise there was no record of that carving.

Art Waldie was self-taught, a situation which probably produced a distinctive approach to some of his pieces. At first his interests lay with wildlife and human activities. But in the last 15 years of his productive life he was mostly occupied with heraldic projects, particularly those with a Scottish connection.

Art has done no carving since 2000.
